Creative Arts Therapies

What is Creative Arts Therapy?

The term “Creative Arts Therapy” is an umbrella term that encompasses Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Dance/Movement Therapy, and Drama Therapy. All of the Creative Arts Therapies use the tools of their artforms in service of the therapeutic relationship and process.

In an art therapy session, for example, you might use drawing, painting, sculpture or collage to explore the difficulties that are bringing you to the therapy room. In a Drama Therapy session you might use characters, story, role-play or improvisation to “get at your stuff.”

All of the Creative Arts Therapies also incorporate talk therapy methods, so you won't just be making art and expressing yourself, you'll be digging into those issues that are most challenging, gaining insight and moving toward action to help make positive change in your life.

At Community Playspace, We do things differently…

As a Creative Arts Therapy (C.A.T.s) Collective, we do things differently. We think everyone needs therapy, because our culture needs therapy. We exist in a racist, homophobic, transphobic, sizeist, ableist system. We are bombarded by social media images and messages that are presenting a capitalist, colonialist view of reality that serves to keep individuals anxious, striving for unattainable ideals, and confused by the “content” of so many conflicting “experts.”

At Community Playspace, we take a client-centred, social justice, trauma-informed, family-systems and attachment-based approach to therapy. We believe that all individuals are capable of change and healing, and that the arts are powerful tools to help you get there.
